Best Ever Crochet Hat/Beanie Pattern!!

After many request for a hat pattern I decided to come up with my "favorite" which is a combination or patterns I have used over the years and taken my favorite parts from to make "the best ever crochet hat pattern"!! With every pattern I ever tried it seemed that each hat was to short, too long, too big, to small... blah blah blah...

For years I have been making beanie hats and adding faces to them and such for gifts, photo props, and everything in-between. After spending money on many patterns and much trial and error I finally came up with the perfect pattern. I have been making it from memory forever, it seems like, but I figured with so many request I should try to put it on paper and share it with everyone.
So here goes...

I will start with a toddler /small child size since that seems to be the most popular.  With this pattern I used an "I" hook and Worsted Weight yarn. Hobby Lobby's "I Love this Yarn" and Redheart's "With Love" are my Favorite brands right now. I tend to crochet on the tighter side so you may have to use an "H" hook.
I have literally made hundreds of has and this pattern is always true to size and fits perfect.

Chain 4 Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Rd 1: ch 1, 9 single crochet(sc) in to ring, join with sl st in 1st sc.   (10 total Sc because ch 1 counts as a stitch)
Rd 2: Ch 2 , double crochet (dc) in the same st as joining, 2 dc in each sc around, join with a sl st. (20 dc, beginning ch 2 counts as 1st dc from here on out.)
Rd 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next dc, 2dc in the next dc*, (2 dc in every other st) continue from * rest of round and join with sl st. (30dc)
Rd 4: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next two dc,  2dc in the next dc*, continue rest of round and join with sl st.(40 dc)
Rd 5: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc*,  continue rest of round and join with sl st.(50 dc)
Rd 6: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next 4 dc, 2dc in the next dc*,  continue rest of round and join with sl st. (60 dc)
Rd 7-15:Ch 2, dc in each dc, continue rest of round and join with sl st. (do not dc in joining sp for these rounds as you have with previous rounds.) (60 dc)

For kids with larger noggins you may need to ad an extra row or if you just like for the hat to be longer and come down further over the ears.

This is a perfect base hat pattern. From here you can add stripes, ears, faces, etc and turn it into anything your heart desires...

Below are some examples of hats I made using this base pattern.

I hope you enjoy the pattern and please let me know if you have any questions!

As always... Thanks for visiting!!

  4. I have a five year old grandson who loves ninja turtles. Since I just learned to crochet this year I was thinking I might to make him one with your pattern. He does have a rather big head for 5. Will this pattern fit him or will I have to enlarge it and if so where. Thank you , Crochet Dummy Me

    1. Hello Cathy!
I think this pattern should fit a five year old just fine even if his head is a little larger. If it does not fit you could enlarge it by adding to Rd 7. you could dc in the first 29, then 2dc in the next, then dc in the last 29. If that is not enough you could add as many as you like evenly spaced around the hat. if the hat feels too short you could add extra rows...
please let me know how it works out for you.
      Thanks!

  5. As I am a beginner, please excuse if my questions seem silly. For the turtle hats, when do you switch colors? At what row to you change back to green again? Also, would you provide instructions for the eyes? Thank you!

  6. You said this pattern would fit a 5 year old. I'm still new and not quite good enough at pattern reading to figure out how to shrink it. Do you have a pattern for newborns or even 6ish months?

  7. for 3-6 months you would do round 1-4 the same but for rnd 5 you would do 2 double crochet in every 4th stitch all the way around. for rnds 6-12 you would just double crochet in each stitch around. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Crochet plastic bag holder w/ free pattern

I have recently become hooked on making Crochet shopping bag holders. I think most us us have a drawer or a cabinet full of those plastic shopping bags. I would get so aggravated when I open my cabinet and bags start to fall out. So I got to thinking I have ton or yarn why not make something to contain all of these bags. Then I set out to  Pinterest on a mission to find a pattern to make my own. my favorite that I have found so far is by  crochet it creations . I followed the pattern until the end where decided to make it all one piece instead of making the top separate an sewing it on. I did the last row in Triple Crochet an made a chain of around 60 and threaded it through the top like a draw string an then joined it to the beginning to make a loop to hang it with. Find pattern  here I as able to get 3 total out of one skein of Super Saver Ombre. Only 2 were pictured because someone wanted the first one as soon as I finished it! This one is made from that Walmart  Mainsta

Ninja Turtle Crochet pattern

It has been awhile since my last post and I think I am well over due for a FREE PATTERN!!  In 2013 by far hands down my most popular hat was the "Ninja Turtle". I couldn't make them fast enough! It seemed that everyone wanted one and in every size from newborn to adult. I used my favorite basic hat pattern that is my go to foundation for most all of my hats. If you don't have a favorite hat pattern you can find some really great ones on Etsy. The one I use is a simple double crochet beanie hat pattern. Now for the fun pat.... How do I make go from a basic beanie to a Ninja Turtle? Well it is actually quite simple... First I make the first few rows of the hat in a kinda sage green (like a turtle) then I put a strip of about 4 rows in what ever color the customer wanted depending on which Turtle they wanted it to be. For example I would use red, blue, orange, or purple. After completing the 4 color rows (that make the "eye mask") I do 4 more rows of green.
